From April 27 to May 14, the “Yakishime and the Transformation of Clay” exhibition, organized by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, is being held at the Diem Hung Thi Art Foundation of the Hue Fine Arts Museum in Thua Thien–Hue Province, central Vietnam. This exhibition is part of the activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam and is also included in the program of the “Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2023,” which takes place from April 28 to May 5.
The exhibition focuses on yakishime, the most primitive ceramic technique, in which unglazed clay vessels are fired at high temperatures. It showcases works that trace the development of yakishime in Japan from its origins to the present day. The exhibits include tea ceremony utensils that played a significant role in the development of traditional Japanese culture, as well as everyday tableware essential to Japanese daily life. In addition, contemporary ceramic artists’ diverse sculptural works created using yakishime techniques are also on display.
The exhibition in Hue follows a previous showing at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi, which was held from April 4 to 20.
