Vietnam aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture by 2050.

(VOVWORLD) – The Vietnamese government has issued the “Agricultural Development Strategy for 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050” aiming for sustainable agricultural development. The strategy focuses on building environmentally friendly, green agriculture capable of responding to climate change.

Although Vietnamese agriculture has shown remarkable growth, effectively managing land, water, and biological resources remains an urgent challenge. To address this, the government has set the above strategy to promote green and climate-resilient farming.

According to Dao The Anh, Deputy Director of the Agricultural Science Institute under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, over the next ten years, Vietnam aims to achieve an agricultural growth rate of 2.5–3%, an export growth rate of 5–6%, while also controlling farmland pollution, conserving biodiversity, and improving water resource management.

Deputy Director Anh said:

“Currently, agricultural greenhouse gas emissions account for about 30% of Vietnam’s total emissions, which is a significant share and leaves considerable room for reduction. By 2030, we aim to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions by 10%, and by 2050, achieve the government’s commitment of ‘net-zero’ emissions. This means the ultimate goal is to bring agricultural emissions down to zero.”
